Vision 2030WHO WE ARE
Sankara Eye Foundation – USA (Donor Profile)

45 MILLION PEOPLE ARE VISUALLY IMPAIRED.
The magnitude of blindness is enormous. India has the largest population of the world’s blind; with over 45 million visually impaired and 12 million totally blind.
According to the World Health Organization, World Vision Report (2019):
“At present, at least 2.2 billion people around the world have a vision impairment, of whom at least 1 billion have a vision impairment that could have been prevented or is yet to be addressed. The world faces considerable challenges in terms of eye care, including inequalities in the coverage and quality of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services; a shortage of trained eye care service providers; and poor integration of eye care services into health systems, among others.”
Every year, one million more people are added to these statistics. Fortunately, nearly 80% of them can easily be cured if only they can receive treatment.

PEOPLE IN RURAL AREAS HAVE LITTLE HOPE.

KALYANAM KAROTI, UTTAR PRADESH
Kalyanam Karoti, Mathura (KKM) is a charitable organization focused on improving the quality of life for the disabled and marginalized population in Uttar Pradesh by providing affordable and accessible treatment, including surgeries and rehabilitation.
KKM started its charitable eye hospital in 1996. It is focused on providing free cataract eye surgeries to needy patients by following a model of paid surgeries subsidizing free surgeries, similar to Sankara Eye Foundation’s model.

Partnership with Sankara Eye Foundation USA
Sankara Eye Foundation partnered with KKM Mathura in 2019 with an initial funding tranche for 1,000 cataract surgeries, followed by subsequent funding for another 5,000 free surgeries. Currently, KKM has a free eye surgery capacity of 11,000, of which it performed 3,517 for Sankara Eye Foundation in 2021-22.
Historically, due to a lack of funding, the hospital had been unable to accommodate all of the patients in need of free surgery services. Our partnership eased those difficulties and they can now scale and grow their operations.
